Internet Recruiting

The Internet levels the recruiting playing field for small businesses. The potential of Internet recruiting is unmatched, and employers are tapping this potential in exploding numbers. More than 500,000 jobs are advertised on the 15 largest Internet career sites every day.

With the Internet you can afford an ad that reaches millions. It's not surprising that Internet recruiting is so popular. Company job listings are available on the Internet around the clock and around the world, at a fraction of the cost of an ad in even the smallest Sunday newspaper. A typical employment ad, costing $75 to $150 placed on an Internet job board, has a potential audience of more than 50 million people across the U.S. and the world. Your employment ad on the Internet provides qualified job-seekers with immediate access to your urgent staffing needs.

The Web is your critical advantage in today's competitive employment marketplace. Since on-line recruiting is a digital media, the costs of formatting, distributing, and publishing in print media are eliminated. These cost savings, which are passed on to employers, are a boon to small business's recruiting budget. The Internet's recruiting affordability means even the smallest business can post ads that reach the same number and caliber of job seekers as the largest business reaches. This is a significant benefit for small growing businesses competing for workers in today's low-unemployment marketplace. In a recent survey of 428 high growth companies, 60% of CEOs said a lack of skilled workers is their number-one barrier to growth.

Internet recruiting is the most effective way to reach the most qualified candidates. Through Internet recruiting you are more likely to attract qualified local job-seekers using the Web as their first line of attack in finding a new position. What's more, Internet job-seekers are better educated and more affluent than non-Internet users. 90% of the Internet audience has attended college and more than 60% have Bachelor's degrees. 70% earn more than $25,000 a year and 48% earn more than $50,000 a year. 10% of Internet job seekers are management professionals, 20% are non-management professionals, 29% are employed in computer-related occupations and 30% are either employed in academia or are students.

No other recruiting resource can give you the ease and speed of the Internet. Most Internet recruiting is done through on-line career centers, such as CareerMosaic, The Monster Board, and the Online Career Center. On-line career centers offer employers several easy electronic listing methods to select from in posting their open positions. Career centers offer databases of resumes for employers to search and databases of jobs searchable by job-seekers, who use keywords to identify desired positions and respond to the selected companies, usually through e-mail, fax or telephone. Internet recruiting gives you faster response than traditional recruiting methods because your ad is posted immediately and is instantly available to candidates.

Keyword searching lets you target your audience. The keyword searches used by Internet job-seekers decreases the possibility that you will be deluged by candidate responses. In fact, many employers report receiving fewer—but more qualified candidate responses—than they receive from traditional newspaper print ads. Keyword searches also make it easy to target your Internet ad to regional or local candidates, because ads are searchable by state or region. However, since your ad is available worldwide you can also attract candidates who want to relocate to your area, and will assume interview-trip and relocation costs.

Internet job-boards also enable you to provide a profile of your company to give job-seekers details about company benefits, career advancement, and your firm's goals, achievement and values. A profile page is either included in a career center's membership service package, or may be purchased separately. Employers using a career center's basic ad posting service typically can purchase a profile page separately.

Internet recruiting is ideal for today's small business. Is it time for you to tap its incredible potential?
