WHAT IS AN INTRANET?
Technical Definition
According to its technical definition, Intranets are private, secure Web-based networks that connect groups of people such as employees and business partners to vital corporate information, and allow for secure communication and collaboration among these groups. In other words, an Intranet is like your company's own private Internet. However, as most Intranets allow for inclusion of external sites and individuals to this private network, they can operate as "Extranets" as well.
Business Applications
Whichever way you want to define it, the uses for an Intranet are obvious and limitless:
- Projects can be facilitated among geographically dispersed team members.
- Documents can be shared, created and updated in one central environment.
- Company data such as sales volume or training materials can be accessed on command.
- Reports, notices, and forms can be distributed with the push of a button.
- Real-time group discussions can be administered.
- And the list goes on...
More importantly, your company probably possesses most, if not all of the equipment and software that you would need to run one of these Intranets, making their adoption an easy cost-benefit decision to make.
