70S AND BEYOND - MANAGE YOUR FINANCES

70s and beyondRetirement. The time to do all the things you've put off—travel, spend more time with family, volunteer in your community, savor life. Retiring can change your mindset. Lifetime Retirement Planning with Wachovia is designed to help make your life in retirement all you want it to be.

Stay on Track

As you approach retirement, you have an important transition to make. Instead of earning a paycheck, you'll likely have to start paying yourself. In the early years of your retirement, it may be important to emphasize investments with strong growth potential. Later in retirement, it might be appropriate to shift some of your assets to more secure investments that pay income. Here are some steps you can take to help simplify the process.

  • Consolidate your retirement plans -consider rolling all your tax-deferred retirement plans and accounts into one rollover IRA to help simplify your financial situation 1
  • Seek confirmation - discuss your strategy with a qualified adviser who can help make the process simpler and more convenient and help you avoid potential pitfalls.
  • Prepare for withdrawals - pay close attention to minimum distribution rules that require you to begin withdrawals from your retirement accounts when you reach age 70½.
  • Think about your legacy - consider a stretch IRA to extend the advantages of tax-deferred accumulation to your heirs.2
  • Protect your investments - consider taking steps to help protect your retirement assets and income.
  • Prepare for business transition - if you are a small business owner, review business agreements and transfer plans.
  • Insure for future needs - look into long-term care insurance, which can helpmeet expenses that would deplete your estate in the case of an extended illness.3

Monitor Your Plan

One of the keys to protecting retirement income is developing a plan that makes sense for you, and then monitoring your progress along the way. Wachovia can help you determine where you are, identify your retirement income needs, keep you informed about the choices available to you, and work with you to make any necessary adjustments.
