First Union and Wachovia Offer Special Loan Help in Wake of the Attacks on September 11, 2001

CHARLOTTE, NC - Wachovia Corporation (NYSE: WB), through its subsidiaries First Union National Bank and Wachovia Bank, N.A., is offering a special loan program to those impacted by the attacks on September 11, 2001. For the next 45 days, consumers can obtain an unsecured loan between $3,000 and $15,000 with no origination fee at 9.99% APR. The loan's maximum term is 36 months and the first payment will be deferred for 60 days. The banks also are offering consumers the option of deferring a payment on any existing consumer installment loans.

The company has established special hotlines to assist those impacted. For information on new loans at the special rate mentioned above, consumers can call 1-800-761-4221 or contact their local branch. To inquire about deferring payment on existing consumer installment loans, First Union customers should call 1-800-334-3601; Wachovia customers should call 1-800-346-6512. These offers apply only to those impacted by the attacks on September 11, 2001.
