Wachovia Names Chief Operating Officer and Vice Chairmen

Wachovia announced today that G. Joseph Prendergast has been elected president and chief operating officer of Wachovia Corporation and Wachovia Bank, N.A. Walter E. Leonard Jr. and Robert S. McCoy Jr. have been elected vice chairmen of the two companies.

Prendergast will continue to serve as head of the Banking Division, which is comprised of the company’s consumer and corporate banking activities, Wachovia Bank, N.A. and Wachovia Securities Inc.

Leonard continues as executive in charge of Wachovia Operational Services Corporation. He has responsibility for the banking and credit operations, information processing, systems development, remittance services, telecommunications and other support provided to Wachovia member companies by this subsidiary.

McCoy continues as chief financial officer and executive in charge of the Financial Management Division. He has oversight of the Control, Financial Information, Treasury, Investment Portfolio, Asset and Liability Management, Bond Underwriting and Trading, and Investor Relations areas as well as the General Services Division.

L. M. Baker Jr., Wachovia’s chief executive officer, said, "Wachovia is blessed with an exceptionally strong and talented senior executive management team. These new titles recognize the breadth of these individuals’ responsibilities and their significance to Wachovia’s ongoing success."

Prendergast joined Wachovia in New York in 1973 and has served as executive in charge of Wachovia International Banking Corporation, the International and National Banking Divisions, Wachovia Corporate Services Inc. and Georgia Banking. He has had oversight of consumer banking activities since 1994 and corporate banking functions since 1996. He was elected senior executive vice president in 1997.

Prendergast is a native of Wilmington, Del. He graduated from Wesleyan University and received a master's degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in Medford, Mass.

Leonard joined Wachovia in 1965 and has held a number of positions within the Operations Division, including systems development manager and banking operations manager. He has served as technology and operations chief for Wachovia since 1988 and was elected senior executive vice president in 1997. He recently announced plans to retire in February 2000.

Leonard is a native of Durham. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed the UNC Young Executives Institute.

McCoy joined South Carolina National Corporation in 1984 with 23 years of experience in the accounting firm of Price Waterhouse. He was president of South Carolina National Corporation and chief financial officer and vice chairman of South Carolina National Bank prior to their merger with Wachovia in 1991. McCoy assumed his current position in 1992 and was elected senior executive vice president in 1997.

McCoy is a native of Traverse City, Mich., and a graduate of Western Michigan University.
