First Union Receives Corporate Leadership Award from the National Council of Negro Women, Inc.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The National Council of Negro Women, Inc.(NCNW) has awarded First Union Corporation its prestigious Corporate Leadership Award. The honor was presented in recognition of First Union's role in the acquisition of the site for the National Centers for African American Women and the Dorothy I. Height Leadership Institute.

"Our women across the country are deeply appreciative that First Union shares our vision to move the legacy of Mary McLeod Bethune into the twenty-first century through greater community, national and international service ," said Dr. Dorothy I. Height, National Council of Negro Women, Inc. president and chief executive officer.

The award will be presented at the 48th National Convention of the National Council of Negro Women on December 10, 1997 in Washington D.C. The theme for this year's conference is "Taking Charge of Change: Affirming Our Values."

In accepting the award, First Union Corporation senior vice president Lenny Springs stated, "The aims of NCNW is commitment, unity and self reliance. First Union is proud to be a part of helping this organization achieve those goals."

First Union Corporation is the nation's sixth largest bank-holding company and serves approximately 12 million customers from Connecticut to Florida.
