April 23, 1999 Wachovia Names Spence Carolinas Banking Executive Wachovia Corporation announced today that the responsibilities of Will B. Spence Jr., chief executive officer of South Carolina Banking, will be expanded to include North Carolina Banking. Spence now will have oversight of Wachovia’s more than 300 branches in the Carolinas. Stanhope A. Kelly, senior executive vice president in charge of banking, said, "Will Spence is a highly skilled and talented banker with experience in most major North Carolina markets. He has achieved tremendous market impact and profitability growth in South Carolina. His leadership will ensure that Wachovia continues to capitalize and build on the successes that Wachovia has achieved in the Carolinas." Spence joined Wachovia in Winston-Salem in 1969 and has held various banking assignments in North Carolina, including Belmont city executive, Charlotte retail banking manager and regional executive in Raleigh. He served as executive in charge of Wachovia's Consumer Financial Services Division in Winston-Salem before assuming his current position in 1995. He was elected executive vice president of Wachovia Corporation in 1997. Spence is a native of Clayton, N.C., and a graduate of North Carolina State University. He also completed the Executive Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the Partners Program of the Darden Graduate School of Business at the University of Virginia. |
