Calhoun Named Healthcare Industry Practice Leader for Wachovia Insurance Services

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Wachovia Insurance Services, Inc. announced today that Ronald L. Calhoun has joined the firm as senior vice president and managing director of the National Healthcare Industry Practice.

A 19-year veteran of the healthcare industry risk management field, Calhoun will oversee the growth and development of specialized risk management and brokerage services for healthcare industry clients such as hospital systems, physician groups, senior care facilities and managed care organizations. Wachovia Insurance Services' healthcare industry specialists are located in key markets throughout the United States.

“Ron Calhoun is a noted leader in the healthcare industry, and our clients and staff will benefit immensely from his leadership and knowledge.  His decision to join Wachovia Insurance Services is a reflection of our commitment to building one of the most technically competent insurance brokerage and risk management consulting operations in the industry,” said William M. Choate, managing director for commercial brokerage with Wachovia Insurance Services. “We are excited to have Ron lead our healthcare industry practice as we continue providing world-class technical support to clients throughout the nation.”

Calhoun joins Wachovia Insurance Services from Marsh, Inc., where he most recently served as managing director and National Healthcare Practice Leader for North America. During his tenure with Marsh, Calhoun facilitated the development of innovative risk transfer products and services specifically for the healthcare provider community.

As an active leader in both the healthcare and risk management industries, Calhoun is a member of the American Health Lawyers Association, the American Society of Healthcare Risk Management and the Health Management Academy, a “think tank” organization representing prominent not-for-profit health care systems. He serves on the board of directors of the Coalition for Affordable and Reliable Healthcare, the primary lobbying initiative for the passage of meaningful tort reform.

In addition, Calhoun serves on the advisory board of the Owen School of Management's Healthcare MBA Program at Vanderbilt University, and the advisory committee of The Sullivan Group, developers of one of the most effective Emergency Room Clinical Risk Management strategies worldwide. He also serves on the board of directors of The American Association of Caregiver Education, an advocate organization supporting the needs of family caregivers.

Calhoun earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from The Citadel and a master's degree in human resource development from Clemson University.
