September 21, 2000 Durden to Retire from Wachovia in January Hugh M. Durden, executive vice president, will retire from Wachovia Corporation effective Jan. 31, 2001, with almost 29 years of service. Durden, 57, is responsible for customer relationships and business development in the corporate line of business.
Durden joined Wachovia as a management trainee in June 1972 and became a loan administration officer later that year. He was named head of the Loan Administration Division in 1977. He was elected executive vice president and became head of the Southeast Corporate Division in 1979. He subsequently held positions as executive in charge of the Corporate Services Division, regional executive for the Southern Region in Charlotte, N.C., head of trust services and president of Wachovia Corporate Services Inc. He assumed his current position in January 1999. "Hugh Durden has made many contributions to Wachovia," said G. Joseph Prendergast, president and chief operating officer. "He oversaw the initial design of Wachovia’s trust and wealth management businesses and was responsible for the development of capital markets activities. He will be missed." Durden is a native of Marietta, Ga., and a graduate of Princeton University. He received a master’s degree in business administration from Tulane University. Durden is based in Atlanta, where he serves as a trustee of the Woodruff Arts Center, chairman of the Latin American Association Capital Campaign and a board member of the Margaret Mitchell House and Museum. He also is chairman of the Georgia chapter of the Newcomen Society, a trustee of the Alfred I. DuPont Trust and a director of the Nemours Foundation. |
