Charlotte's 2005 PGA Tour Event Raises $1,000,000 for Teach For America
Total Contributions Grow to $4.2 Million in First Three Years

CHARLOTTE, N.C., October 13, 2005 – The 2005 Wachovia Championship, featuring an exciting playoff and victory by Vijay Singh, today announced a $1 million donation to its primary charitable beneficiary, Teach For America.

Teach For America is the national corps of outstanding recent college graduates of all academic majors who commit two years to teach in rural and urban public schools in low-income communities, and become lifelong leaders for expanding opportunity for all children.

This marks the third straight year the Wachovia Championship has donated $1 million to Teach For America. Over three short years of existence, the Wachovia Championship has donated nearly $4.2 million to Teach for America and other charities.

“We’re thrilled to continue our support for Teach For America, an organization that is working to ensure that all children receive quality educations,” said Tournament Chairman Mac Everett. “At the end of the day, helping our communities is what the Wachovia Championship is really all about.”

Today, nearly 3,600 Teach For America corps members are reaching more than a quarter of a million students in 22 urban and rural regions nationwide, while more than 10,000 alumni are working in education, policy, law, medicine and other sectors to effect the broader changes needed to bring about educational equity in our country.

“Once again, the Wachovia Championship has shown its commitment to ensuring all children have access to a quality education,” said Wendy Kopp, founder and president of Teach For America. “Because of this commitment, we are able to expand the recruiting, training and support for our corps members who are teaching in low-income communities across the country. We are extremely grateful for this ongoing support.”

“The PGA TOUR is currently on pace to reach a $1 billion milestone since tournaments first started donating to charity in 1938,” said Kym Hougham, Wachovia Championship tournament director. “For us to be able to contribute our share, we thank Wachovia. We also are grateful to our volunteers, corporate participants and all those individuals and organizations who have donated their time, services and monetary contributions in various capacities.”
