Coppedge to Lead Wachovia Bank in Florida

Wachovia Bank, N.A. announced today that J. Kenneth Coppedge will become president of Florida Banking in June. He will succeed Warren S. Orlando who, as previously announced, plans to retire in mid-June 1999. Coppedge, a native Floridian, will be based in Tampa and oversee Wachovia’s expansion plans in the state as well as full-service banking operations in Florida, which were acquired last year through mergers with 1st United Bancorp and American Bankshares Inc., and corporate services offices in Jacksonville, Orlando, Tampa and Pensacola.

D. Gary Thompson, Wachovia’s chief executive officer for Georgia and Florida Banking, said, "Ken Coppedge is a talented banker with the vision and leadership skills necessary to expand Wachovia’s presence in Florida through full-service and special service offices in key markets. His corporate experience in Florida and proven success as a senior loan administration manager, regional executive and corporate banking manager have prepared him well for this new assignment."

Coppedge joined Wachovia in 1983 and has held management positions in a number of areas, including loan administration, corporate banking and regional banking. He was elected executive vice president in 1997 and most recently has served as division executive for Regional Corporate Financial Services. In this position, he has been based in Atlanta and has had functional responsibility for middle market banking across Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

Coppedge is a native of Coral Gables, Fla., and a graduate of Auburn University. He received a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Florida.

Currently he is a resident of Marietta, Ga., and a member of the Cobb County Development Authority. He is a past president of the Cobb County YMCA board of directors. He has been a member of the executive committee of the Kennesaw State University Foundation and a member of the Cobb County Chamber of Commerce board of directors. He also was active in the 100 Mentor Program.
