First Union Contributes $200,000 to Help Control Florida Wildfires
Funds to be used for fuel in airplanes suppressing fires statewide

TALLAHASSEE - First Union today contributed $200,000 towards the efforts of controlling the fires that have raged throughout Florida. The funds, presented to Florida agricultural commissioner Bob Crawford, will be used immediately for fuel in airplanes suppressing fires throughout Florida.

"First Union recognizes the seriousness of the fires that have ravaged our state," said Paul Hyson, First Union area president . "We were more than willing to step up to the plate financially and support the efforts to bring this crisis under control."

According to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, First Union was the first corporate citizen in Florida to contribute to its effort to rally corporate support around controlling the fires and aid in protecting the Florida environment.

In April, First Union announced its "Keep Florida Green" initiative. A major component of the program is the commitment to protecting and enhancing the environment.

"This is a difficult time in Florida for our customers and employees," stated Hyson. "First Union is committed to supporting any efforts that will bring this tragic situation to an end."

First Union Corporation is a leading provider of financial services to more than 16 million retail and corporate customers throughout the East Coast and the nation. It is the nation's sixth-largest bank holding company with assets of $220 billion as of March 31, 1998.
