Wachovia Names Clifton Strain Executive Recruiting Specialist for Corporate and Investment Bank

Charlotte, NC - Wachovia Securities today announced that Clifton Strain, Managing Director in the Financial Sponsors Group, has been named Executive Recruiting Specialist for the Corporate and Investment Bank. Strain will assume his new responsibilities on January 1, 2003, and report to Steve Cummings and Barnes Hauptfuhrer, Co-Heads of Wachovia's Corporate and Investment Bank.

“Barnes and I are very pleased that Cliff will assume the position of Executive Recruiting Specialist.   We view this position to be critical to the development of the Corporate and Investment Bank in terms of maximizing our ability to recruit highly qualified, diverse talent in senior roles.  With more than 12 years of experience in investment banking, Cliff knows this business inside out, and will be able to spearhead our effort to market Wachovia as a place to build a career for all people,” said Cummings.

As the Executive Recruiting Specialist, Strain will identify and recruit candidates from diverse backgrounds for positions throughout the Corporate and Investment Bank.  Strain will primarily focus on candidates for senior level roles (Vice President and above) and will partner with CIB’s Recruiting Team to increase the number of channels through which diverse candidates are introduced to all positions in the division.  Strain will be responsible for growing a network of contacts in key professional organizations to promote Wachovia and will work closely with all business-unit heads in the Corporate and Investment Bank to fulfill their specific hiring needs.  He will continuously look for opportunities where he can play a key role marketing Wachovia to potential candidates through sponsorships and speaking engagements.  Strain will continue to be based in New York.

Strain joined Wachovia in 1999 from Morgan Stanley.   He has spent the past 10 years covering Private Equity firms, providing merger and acquisition, buyside and sellside advisory services, and originating equity, debt, and high yield financings.  Before joining Morgan Stanley in 1992, Strain worked in the Restructuring Group of Prudential Investments and the Investment Banking Division of Drexel, Burnham & Lambert Co., Inc.  Cliff earned his BA from Morehouse College and his MBA from Harvard University.
