An exporter and importer may agree to payment on a documentary collection basis when the protection afforded by a letter of credit is too expensive or not required by the commercial and country risks involved. Documentary collections are less costly than letters of credit and may enhance the exporters' or importers' competitive position in bidding or buying products. However, documentary collections may present more risk than cash in advance or a letter of credit for the exporter since there is no guarantee from a bank that payment will be forthcoming.
