First Union Global Cash Management to Offer Electronic Commerce Real-time Processing Via Sterling Commerce

Commerce:Advantage enables nation's sixth largest bank to expand electronic commerce services for business customers.

Sterling Commerce, a leading worldwide provider of electronic commerce software and services, today announced that Charlotte-based First Union Corporation is among the first to license Commerce:Advantage, Sterling Commerce's electronic commerce payments and processing software. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Commerce:Advantage enables banks to offer expanded payments outsourcing services, real-time wire transfers, enhanced international capabilities and non-financial EC services. Commerce:Advantage processes large payment files concurrently to improve payment outsourcing throughput and productivity. It also enables banks to perform automated, real-time processing rather than batch processing, critical for expediting wire transfers with short mandatory turnaround times.

"Our corporate customers need reliable real-time processing for critical transactions and rapid throughput for large processing volumes," said Karin Farnsworth, Vice President and Product Manager for integrated payments and collections at First Union. "Using Commerce:Advantage software, we can combine the latest technology with our EC processing expertise, meeting our customers' financial and non-financial electronic commerce needs. We selected Sterling Commerce because it provides these capabilities."

Bob Heard, Vice President and General Manager of Sterling Commerce's Commerce Payments Business Unit said "We developed Commerce:Advantage to meet the unique and changing electronic commerce needs of banks and their corporate customers. We're delighted to provide this versatile solution to First Union's Global Cash Management Division, the third largest cash management provider in the country."

In addition to Commerce:Advantage, First Union also uses Sterling Commerce's CONNECT family of software solutions to move and manage business information between its mainframes and departmental applications such as credit card processing, demand deposit and account posting.
